Why does this matter? Because our body has a pH level that has to be the same no matter what we eat. The pH of our blood has to be 7.365. No matter what we eat or drink our body is going to maintain a blood pH of 7.365. This is slightly more alkaline that neutral (7.0). If we eat a lot of foods that are acidic and drink fluids that are acidic, the body is designed to make up for this by taking minerals from the muscles and bones to adjust the pH back to 7.365.
Is that bad? Muscles that don't have enough minerals feel achy. Bones that don’t have enough minerals become weak. Osteoporosis is a result of not having enough calcium and other minerals. Joints that don't have enough minerals become stiff and sore. A heart that doesn't have enough minerals will become irregular when it beats (arrhythmia). A brain without adequate
levels of minerals won't think clearly or as quickly and mood will be affected. Certainly not the optimal level of health that you want for your body, is it?
So what's the answer? It is certainly not avoiding all acidic foods. We still need the nutrients in some of those foods. Yes, cut back on the sugars and breads, but keep eating the protein, even if it is acidic. The answer is to make it easier for the body to get those alkaline minerals. Drinking water that is more alkaline provides a source of nutrients for the body to use in balancing the pH.
How do you get alkaline water? Well, you could out a quarter tsp of baking soda in your water each day. That would make the water alkaline. Some people just take the baking soda straight without even diluting it in water. This might work too. But baking soda is only sodium bicarbonate.
